The Dutch chocolate factory 'De Zaan' was created by the entrepreneurial spirit of 12 Dutch medium-sized companies in Koog aan de Zaan, north of Amsterdam. In 1910 they decided to found a joint trading company together and the decision was quickly made to specialize in chocolate. An important aspect was the large number of mills that are (still) located here. They were used to grind the imported cocoa beans into fine cocoa powder.
Today, owned by the market leader Olam Cacao Group, De Zaan still stands for premium quality in the field of cocoa.
